Aohna Plastic African figure

One of the advantages of having my own website is that I can show individual figures in great detail. I have often wanted to see closer views of figures and small details. In this post I am doing so for the Aohna (Athena) plastic African figures, made in Greece. This company made superb figures, carrying on a tradition started by PAL. Most of their production was for the tourist market, concentrating on Greek subjects; historical and contemporary, but a few figures were not, including these African ones.

Here are three examples of the figure most often found, although even this one is hard to find in good condition. The one on the left is made in mid-brown plastic. The other is slightly larger and has very subtle differences, one I can point out is the shield which has a different number of bindings on the top. It is also painted differently, but these shields were often painted with different patterns. Sometimes the larger the casting the earlier production it is, but I don’t know if that is the case here. These close up views demonstrate how good the sculpting is; great facial details for instance. There is one more figure in the range that I know of, he carries a sort of bundle on his head which I hope to add if I aquire it in the future; all the figures on my site are either still in my collection or have been.
